The war ended with the division of the Netherlands, where the southern provinces (present-day Belgium) continued as a Catholic territory under the rule of the Spanish Habsburgs, while the northern provinces (present-day Netherlands) became an independent republic. The causes of the war were a high tax burden, lack of political influence and religious differences.
