Rome Becomes Byzantine Empire also known as Byzantium – Byzantium was an empire in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages that developed from the eastern parts of the Roman Empire. Historians place the start of the empire at different times, but Constantine the Great’s re-founding of the old city of Byzantium as Constantinople, in contemporary times often referred to as “New Rome”, in 330 Bc, was of decisive importance.
