Rome:The second Punic wars- Hannibal Barca- The Second Punic War 218–201 BCE was due to the envy of the Romans over the great progress of the Carthaginians in Spain under army commanders such as Hamilkar and his son Hannibal. The immediate cause of the war was Hannibal’s attack on Saguntum. Hannibal then took the offensive and marched through southern Gaul and crossed the Alps, where he lost large parts of the army and most of the war elephants. The victories at Po and Trebia in 218 made Hannibal lord of northern Italy, and after the victories at Lake Trasimeno in 217 and not least Cannae in 216, several southern Italian peoples shifted their loyalty from the Romans to Hannibal.
