120

The Viking Age is a term used for the period from around 800 to around 1050, especially in the Nordic countries and partly in other regions, such as the British Isles. The period is named after Vikings and Viking voyages, but the term “Viking Age” was first used towards the end of the 19th century. In European history, this period is part of the early Middle Ages, while archaeologists often use the term Late Iron Age. The Viking Age is characterized by population growth, settlement, increased trade with Europe, centralization of power and the transition from Norse religion to Christianity. The beginning of the Viking Age is often linked to the attack on the abbey of Lindisfarne in northern England in 793. It is nevertheless common to trace the beginning of the period back to around 750, so that the preconditions for the Viking voyages are also included. This applies to both internal conditions, such as the development of sea-going ship technology, and external factors, such as the establishment of the Carolingian dynasty in the Frankish Empire in 753 and the Abbasid Caliphate in 751. In Denmark, large construction projects, such as Danevirke and Kanhave canal on Samsø, are signs of increased central power. social organization, the need for defense and contact with the continent.
