The first Punic War 264–241 BCE essentially concerned the rule of Sicily, where the Carthaginians’ growing influence was perceived as a threat to the colonies in southern Italy. After a reorganization of the Roman fleet, the war was settled by Catulus’ victory over the Aegean islands in 241, and Carthage had to cede its share of Sicily to the Romans; and Sardinia.
